As a student, you work hard to get into a college and pursue your dream. One thing that we do not realise is that our grades do not remain the same once we start college. At times there is a drastic drop in marks during post-secondary. This could lead to overwhelming pressure especially when you are trying your best. Living alone in York University residence, away from family can also make things more difficult. Here are a few ways that would help you deal with the overwhelming pressure of success:

    1. Have faith in yourself:

A significant drop in your grades can really shake you to the core, but do not lose faith in yourself. You got accepted because of your hard work and dedication. Grades drop because the university is harder than school. Take a few steps back and breathe. It is okay if there is a 10% drop in your marks. It happens to the best. You could try different study methods and figure which one works the best for you.

    1. Embrace your imperfection:

Sometimes being imperfect is perfection in itself. But if you are always doubting yourself it could lead to loss of precious time. So always remember it is better to get your work done.

    1. Get your priorities straight:

Get yourself a planner and organize all your assignments, readings and exams. Making a to-do list and checking things off it would give you perspective and would also help to avoid future panic.

    1. Group Study:

Studying in a group can be empowering. It can make you feel more confident about yourself. You could bounce your ideas off each other and also act as editing services. This way you work together to accomplish a common goal.

    1. Talk to a friend:

When you are feeling overwhelmed, it’s easy to feel that you are alone. But this is not the truth. Talk to your friend, have a heart to heart conversation with them. It would not only make you feel lighter but you will also realize that you are not alone. Keeping it all inside could make you feel like you are going to explode.

    1. Take a break:

Constantly studying isn’t going to help. After a point, you are bound to reach your saturation point. Go take a nap, watch something, go for a walk or maybe go to the gym. Giving yourself a much-needed break will leave you feeling refreshed.

    1. Get Help:

There is nothing wrong with asking for help when needed. Your mental health is of utmost importance. So when you feel yourself slipping, get in touch with your academic advisors or student services who can work with you to build better study habits. Never be afraid to ask for help.
